Task 1

Image Manipulation

Historical Research

Image manipulation is the when you use image editing techniques on photographs, in order to create an illusion after the original photo was taken. After Niepce created the first photograph in 1814, photos were already being manipulated around the 1860s. The portrait of the U.S President Abraham Lincoln, is an image manipulation of Lincoln's head and the body of the Southern politician John Calhoun.
Hippolyte Bayard was a French photographer and a pioneer in the history of photography. Born 20th January 1801, and died 14th May 1887.  He invented his own process know as direct positive printing. He also presented the worlds first public exhibition of photographs on June 24th 1839.  His method of photography was to expose silver chloride paper to light, which turned the paper black. He then soaked it in potassium iodide before being exposed in a camera. After the exposure, it was washed in a bath of hyposulfite of soda and dried. This process made his photos unique and they could not be reproduced. Due to the papers poor light sensitivity, an exposure of about 12 minutes was required. Using this method of photography, still objects were considered more appropriate, such as buildings. When this method is used for people, they were told to keep there eyes shut, to get rid of the eerie quality produced, when blinking and moving ones eyes around during a long exposure.

William Mumler was an American spirit photographer, who worked in New York, and Boston. His first spirit photograph was when he took a self-portrait, which developed to apparently show his deceased cousin. He was born in 1832, and died in 1884.
Mumler then left his job as a jeweller, and worked full time as a photographer, he took advantage of of the people who lost there relatives in the American Civil War. His most famous work, the photograph of Mary Todd Lincoln with the ghost of her husband Abraham Lincoln. After being accused of different things, he was taken to court for fraud. Even though he was found not guilty, his career was over, and he died in poverty. Today, Mumler's photos are considered to be fakes.

The Cottingley Fairies, are in a series of five different photographs. The photos were taken by Elsie Wright, and Frances Griffiths. They were both cousins who lived in Cottingley, near Bradford in England. The first two photos were taken in 1917, at that time Elsie was 16 years old and Frances was 9. The pictures caught the eye of a writer called Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, he ended up using them for an article on fairies he had been assigned to write, for the Christmas 1920 edition of The Stand Magazine. Doyle was a spiritualist and he was very intrigued, and enthusiastic about the photographs, so he interpreted them as visible evidence of a psychic phenomena. Some people believed that the photo was real, and others thought the photo taken was fake. In 1921 people lost interest in the Cottingley Fairies. When both the girls grew up, and got married they lived abroad. But in 1966 a reporter from the Daily Express newspaper traced Elsie, who had returned to the UK.

Elsie left open the possibility that she believed she had photographed her thoughts, and the media became interested in the story once again. But in the 1980s Elsie and Frances admitted that the Photographs that they took were fakes, and they used cardboard cutouts of fairies that were copied from a popular children's book at that time, but Frances still said that the fifth and final photograph was real. The photographs and the two cameras used, by them are on display in the National Media Museum in Bradford. I found this pretty interesting because, I live near Cottingley, so I thought I should write about it. I have even visited Cottingley woods, and I was told that the photos were taken in Cottingley woods.

Contemporary Research

Christopher Gilbert is a Belgian Advertising Photographer that specializes in photo Manipulation and has an impressive client list which includes clients such as: IKEA, Levi's, LG Electronics, Mercedes, Ogilvy, PlayStation, and Toyota. He describes him self as a detail-maniac fanatic, because he truly believes that small details can make a big difference.

I really like this photo because, it just looks like a bunch of people that make a tree, but to me it looks like a group of people working together to create something beautiful, like nature which symbolizes peace, and life. It also looks like, different types of people harmonizing together to help the planet.

Frank Uyttenhove, is a Belgian photographer and film director. His photography is mainly based around advertising and fashion assignments for Belgian and international advertising agencies. His work usually has a massage and contains humor and emotion. He was frequently awarded at international festivals. When I looked at the work Frank did, I thought it was really good, and some of the images made me laugh. I found his work very interesting.

Erik Johansson is a Swedish Photographer, but he used to be a computer engineering student. He hasn't been professionally trained in photography but, his Photo manipulations are awesome and very creative. His work is tends to be unbelievable and reality-defying, but, because the fine detail that Erik includes the image looks almost real. Erik first has to create an idea in his head before he goes to make the images. He as even models in some of them. For example the blond guy punching his own face. I really like his Photo manipulation I think its very interesting, and pretty clever. I have added a few photos of his work that I really liked, because the images make you think about them.

- Technical Retouching
Is when you edit an image by adjusting the colour, contrast, white balance, sharpness, removing elements or visible flaws on the materials or skin.

- Creative Retouching
This is used for commercial use to make a more sleek and interesting image for advertising. It can be used in fashion, beauty or advertising photography.

Grimm

Grimm is a story about a detective called Nick Burkheart, who suddenly starts to see strange things. When he was looking at one of the criminals caught there face changed and became monstrous. He thought he was becoming insane until, his aunt came to visit him. His aunt has been looking after him since he was about 9, because his mother died in a car accident. But when his aunt came see him, she told him there family secret, they are the descendents from a line of guardians known as Grimms. They are the so pose to keep balance between, humanity and the mythological creatures of the world called Wesen (pronounced as vessen in the show). Grimms have the ability to see creatures called Wesern that look human to everyone but Grimms have the ability to see what others can not.
Nick can see them now because his aunt is dieing and her gift is passing to him, so it is now his responsibility to keep the Wesern from hurting humans. Nick finds it difficult to deal with but, when he was on a case he seen a Wesern thinking it was the murderer on the case so, he started spying on it but the Wesern knew he was being watched so he tackled Nick, by jumping through and breaking his own window, telling Nick he would have to pay for that. In the end they started talking and the Wesern was called Monroe, he ended up helping Nick solve the case and they became friends. Grimm is a T.V series I really like, and it uses special effect for the transformations. I think this could be classed as photo manipulation because, a video is basically a bunch of images that creates a movement when put together so when, CGI is used basically each frame is edited in special effects, so i think it could be classed as photo manipulation.

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective

Was released in 1944, and is about a pet detective that lives in Miami, Florida, he specialty is retrieving, taming or helping captivated animals. Even though his methods are strange, he is very successful in what he does. He doesn't always get many assignments, so he isn't able to rent or repair his car, which is a 1970s Chevrolet Monte Carlo. He is also the laughing stock of the Metro-Dade Police Department. There is also a Sequal to the film called Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls. The film is about Ace having to find a kidnapped Bottlenose Dolphin called Snowflake, who is the mascot of the Miami Dolphins. Snowflake was kidnapped two weeks before the team is due to play the Super Bowl. Melissa who is the Miami Dolphins press officer, tries to find out who kidnapped Snowflake, but is told by a colleague that she should hire a pet detective, so she hires Ace Ventura, who finds a gem stone in the filter system that belongs to a 1984 ACF Championship Ring, which was won by the Miami Dolphins. In the end he finds out that the chief of police Lois Einhorn is connected to Ray Finkle but doesn't know how, and ponders on it until his dog sat next to Rays photograph, which led Ace to believe that Ray is Lois disgused. Melissa ends up falling in love with Ace, and he catches the culprit in the end.

X-Files

The X-Files is a American Sci-Fi Horror Drama T.V series, Which started in 1993 September 10th, and ended in 2002 May 19, and was nine seasons long and has 202 episodes. The show is about FBI Special Agent Fox Mulder, and Dana Scully who investigate X-Files. X-Files are unsolved cases that have paranormal phenomena, Mulder believes in the existence of Aliens and the paranormal, but Scully is a skeptic and is assigned to make Mulder return to mainstream cases. In the beginning of the series both of them are become pawns in a large conflict and end up only trusting each other. They start with a platonic friendship, that develops into a romance by the end of the series.
Mulder believes in the existence of extraterrestrials and the government conspiracy to hide the truth of the existence of Aliens. He works on cases marked on unsolvable, and involve supernatural/mysterious circumstances. Mulder sees the X-Files as so important that he has made them his life's main purpose. I am looking into X-Files because my story is about a detective who is ends up coming across a burglary, but end up tracking down an Alien. So I was told to look up The X-Files, as a reference for my Idea.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit

In 1988 the film was released, and is an live-action/ comedy film. The film is in a world where there are cartoon characters, human beings and animals live in the same world and can interact with each other. The film is set in 1947, where cartoon characters are called toons, and they act out cartoons the same way actors make a live-action movie. Toons interact with humans and animals freely, and live in a place called Toontown, which is an area near Hollywood, California. The owner of Maroon Cartoon studios, is R.K. Maroon  who is a human. Maroon studios star is Roger Rabbit, who is a fun loving toon. Rogers wife is also one of Maroon studios stars, called Jessica Rabbit who is also a toon. Maroon hires a private detective called Eddie Valiant to investigate the rumors about Jessica having an affair. Eddie hates the toon community because his brother Teddy, was killed by a toon who dropped a piano on him. Since then he has hated toons. When Eddie met Roger, he told him to move on because he had photos of Jessica cheating on him. The pictures show Jessica playing patty-cake with Acme. Maroon and Eddie said to Roger that he and Jessica should split up, upset by this Roger runs away but that makes him a prime suspect because the next day Acme was found dead. At the crime scene, Eddie meets Judge Doom who has found a way to harm toons, because toons can not be virtually harmed. He can kill them by submerging them into a mixture of Turpentine, Acetone, and Benzene which he calls Dip. He demonstrates it by getting an innocent toon shoe and putting it in Dip, the toon dissolves quickly into the Dip leaving only behind red paint. In the end Eddie finds out that it was Doom who, killed Acme and is attempting to take over Toontown because Acmes will has disappeared so Toontown will be sold to Cloverleaf Industries at midnight. In the end Eddie,Jessica, and Roger are captured by Doom, but they manage to escape and Doom gets run over by a steamroller, he survives but it reveals that he too in a toon in disguise as a human, and is wearing a mask. When he is revealed to be a toon Eddie recognises him to be his brothers killer. Eddie ends up dessolving Doom in the Dip and avenges his brothers death, and finds Acmes will on the blank piece of paper that Roger wrote on a love poem  to Jessica, it had Acmes will written in disappearing/reappearing ink. Eddie kisses Roger, proving that his humor has returned and the toon celebrate their victory, as they head back to Toontown, and Porky Pig and Tinker Bell end the film with the usual "That's all folks! ".

The Land That Time Forgot Task 4

Evaluation

When I first got the brief of this project, I already liked the Theme "The Land That Time Forgot", because it sounded adventurous. After we looked through the brief as a class, my friends and I started talking about different ideas we had. I already had a few ideas in mind, and I have them noted down on Task 1. When I started doing my research I already knew what my story was going to be about, so I researched into clothing styles like Steam Punk. When we were asked to do a test story, I thought we could use our main story as a test story, but after a week I found out that we had to have a completely different story for test story. So I had to make one up, I came up with using the name Time, and making him/her a character. As I was thinking about a story I decided to make 4 different characters that, become a group of hero's and they all just have one name, and no surname. When there initials are put together it make the word T.I.M.E.

After completing the character designs, I started working on backgrounds/setting. I find backgrounds difficult because, I am not good with drawing environments. If I redid this project I would spend more time on drawing environments, than character designs. After completing the test story, I started working on my main story. I found it difficult to come up with an outfit for my main character, because he lives on a magical island, that is inhabited by mythical creatures. As I was thinking about ideas, I started talking to friends and family because, I didn't know what his outfit would look like. Would his outfit look unique, other worldly, magical, or scruffy and dirty. If he did wear an other worldly out fit, what would it look like. These are the things that I was thinking about at the time. So when I asked others, they said he should wear torn and scruffy clothes because he lives in a place where there is no civilisation. I did a few drawings but I still didn't like his outfit, it just didn't feel wright. When I asked my brother he said, just make him wear cloths, because don't some of the mythical creatures wear cloths, they could just make his out fit. That is the advise that helped me find the wright one. As a drew the character, I realised that I am making my character to detailed so, I redrew him but made him look more simple, and less complected. Because I focused more on the characters, I only managed to do a few backgrounds, I found designing backgrounds difficult and I didn't have enough time to design them and research different backgrounds Ideas and references. I also found it interesting when I was trying to design, the mythical bird that would rescue Eon. I did a few designs, trying to make the bird look unique by giving it horns, and trying to make it look kinda fluffy. I was really pleased with the end result, because to me it looked caring and majestic. I also did a page of baby drawings because I wasn't used to drawing baby's and I wasn't familiar with the anatomy, but I got the shape write after a couple of tries. I did this because in my story when Eon was a baby he wonders the island and meets different mythical creatures. I really liked this project, because I was able to do a lot of drawing and that has improved my drawing skills.

When I started animating on Toonboom, I found it difficult because I am not use to using a digital tablet, as I was drawing I started improving so, I kept going back and fixing the mistakes I had made, and because my drawings turned out really ruff, I kept neatening my drawings. Also the only reason I used Toonboom was because, I had the software at home, but when I saved my work on to my USB and tryed to open up the file on my Laptop at home, the file wouldnt work and I think thats because I have version 8 and the collage has version 8.1.  Also when I checked the preview of the animation, the clip played very fast, so I tried to change the frame rate, but I couldnt so I had to open up a new project and change the frame rate before I clicked ok, them I had to copy and paste all the layers and frames into that project. Then I checked the prieview to make sure the animation played at the right speed, and it did. If I knew this from the begining I would have just used Photoshop at collage instead. I really like this project and, if I did this project again I would probably make my animation in Photoshop, and I would have done more backgrounds design for my animation.

The Land That Time Forgot Task 3

My Story

I was thinking of making a story about an island that is unknown to everyone because no one knows it exists. And the island is may be inhabited with unknown creatures and maybe some mythical creatures. In history, people have worshiped some mythical creatures like the dragon in the Chinese culture. The Greeks also used to talk about many mythical creatures. In the past people used to claim they have seen a mythical creature, but through out history there have been many story's of unknown creatures but now, no one has claimed to have even seen or heard a mythical creature. So in my story I want to show that every one thinks they don't exists, but really they all have moved to a place unknown to everyone else, which is the floating island.

I think this idea relates to the theme because its a land that no one knows about, and is inhabited by creatures forgotten by man. The island is unknown to use and inhabited by creatures we have forgotten, The Land That Time Forgot.

- Story
A woman is carrying a baby and leaves it in the forest and walks off. Mean while THE MYTHICAL CREATURE was on the mountain and was being attacked by humans, so it got a hold of its children and flew. But it got it by an arrow and dropped its children, so it flew after them, it thankfully saved its children but also found a human baby abandoned in the forest, THE MYTHICAL CREATURE hesitated and looked back and seen the humans charging for her, she looked at the baby and was deciding if she should help the baby or not. She realized that the baby would die it the crossfire so she took the baby with her and fled to the one place where humans couldn't get to and don't know about.... The Floating Island.

When she gets to the floating island, she puts her children down and the human baby. A Dragon appears and tells her to get rid of the baby but she doesn't listen, The Dragon is the one who looks after the island, so he roars at the baby boy, but the baby just laughs and tries to grab the dragon. The Dragon just ignores the baby and fly's away. As the baby is growing up he is wondering the island, and meets other mythical creatures. When he gets to his teen age years he is given a fruit from the sacred tree, his adopted mother gave him this fruit because she has become attached to him. When Eon eats the fruit he stops aging. After so many hundreds of years later, Eon looks exactly the same and hasn't aged a day from when he ate the fruit. Eon is playing with one of his sibling (His adopted mothers children) and ends up going to the edge of the island he slips and is caught by one of his siblings. As he was rescued and a tiny piece of the island breaks and falls down to Earth.

As the rock falls it bounces off of someones head  and lands on a metal surface the camera zooms out to show the earth has changed and is full of metal and is very high tech. The strangers name is Deja-Vu, he sees the bizarre object and picks it up and looks up at the sky. He analyzes the object and finds out that it is worth a lot of money and is super rare, he also finds out people in the past have also found these objects but in the same area. So he gets a map and marks all the spots where they have been found before, only to find out that when he connects the dots it makes a circle. Intrigued by this he gets his crew and they set out in to the sky's, only to find out they are going in circles, puzzled by this Deja-Vu fires his guns in rage and disappointment, but he ends up shooting the islands barrier. The floating island has a barrier to protect its self from humans, they were known to be evil, because they used to hunt the Mythical Creatures. The only reason Eon is on the island is because he was brought by a Mythical Creature.

Surprised by this Deja-vu fires again, and again, trying to see whats on the other side. He keeps shooting and realizes he is cracking the surface of what seems to be the sky. The guardian dragon senses danger and blasts off towards it, When the guardian dragon fires at them they all move back but carry on shooting. This made Deja-Vu more curious about what was behind they sky, so he charged towards it. The barrier was barley intact but when Deja-Vu's ship crashed into it the barrier, the barrier was shattered, amazed to see a giant flying creature in front of him he attacked without a moments hesitation.

Eons mother called out to him and his siblings so they would take cover and hide, but as they were trying to find a safe place to be, Deja-Vu's ship landed, and he got out of his ship, and started killing some of the mythical creatures with his sword. Suddenly Eon heard a voice calling to him so he followed it into the forest. He looked around but the vioce had suddenly vanished, but the ground started shaking and the passage way appeared that lead into the island. Eon went into the island and found a hidden cave, as he went deeper he found pillars and at the end of the cave there was a bright light. But when he looked closer he seen a figure of a woman made of light, she came closer to Eon and put her forehead onto his asking him if he wanted to help save the island and the Mythical Creatures, Eon accepted the the duty and was given power.

Deja-vu was battling the Dragon and caught it off guard by shooting a beam out of this sword which killed the majestic guardian. Eon ran towards the havoc and found the ground soaked in blood, and the Dragon dead, enraged with anger and sorrow he roared towards the sky, and could feel his body filled with power he charged towards Deja-Vu and, started attacking him, inexperienced in combat he couldnt land a hit on Deja-vu and was pushed off the island, filled with rage Eon roared again, and pulled out wings, he flew towards Deja-vu and started attacking him again, Eon heard a cry and flew to rescue the mythical creatures, he ended up killed Deja-Vu's crew, and left him till the end. Eon then charged towards him and stared shooting at him, Deja-vu cancelled them out using his Sword. In the end Eon killed Deja-Vu and became the New Guardian of the Floating island and moved it to space, so no human could ever get to them, and harm another Mythical Creature.
  •  Fruit that keeps you from aging any more and makes you immortal
Main character
My main characters name is Eon
Eon basically means a very long time

Eon could have been abandoned in the forest and found by a mythical creature the mythical creature took pity on the baby boy so he took the baby in and looked after him but slowly became attached to him.

Eon could have been taken to the island by mistake when one of the mythical creatures fled when the humans were trying to poach them or kill them and make them selves more powerful. When the mythical creature quickly grabbed her children and flew away but she was attacked and was injured and she dropped her children so she flew back to save them and also found an abandoned baby, she hesitated but after looking back at the people she realized the baby would die in the crossfire so she took the baby with her.
  • or when she rushed to collect he baby she also took Eon, and when she reached the floating island she was surprised because she also has a human baby.
Eons Adopted parent:
Either a Dragon, Harpy, or a Big Bird creature
  • Mythical Creature
  • Can Fly
  • Also has other kids
The Guardian Dragon:
The Dragon is the one who looks after the floating island and makes sure everyone's safe. Its strong and fierce and guards the island from intruders or from anyone who is causing harm to the Island and the creatures living there.

Villain:
My villains name is Deja-Vu
Deja-Vu is a french word which literally means already seen. Deja-Vu is a phenomenon that happens sometimes. You end up having a strong feeling that an event or experience that is currently happening at the moment has happened before, regardless of it being true or not.

Time:
My story is going to be set in the future and the earth is going to be futuristic.

Floating Island:
I want the floating island to be full of nature and look kinda deserted but look beautiful at the same time. The island is going to be inhabited by lots of mythical creatures. I wanted bright Neon/Fluorescent lights to be on the island to make it look more magical and beautiful.
  • Neon/Fluorescent lights on the island
  • Mythical creatures on the island
  • Island is alive
  • Secret hidden room in the island called the "Heart of the Island"
Maybe the island could be the myth about the garden of Eden but in my story it could be called the Island of Eden.... Maybe
